Duncan, BC at a Glance
Duncan stands between Nanaimo to
the north and Victoria to the
south as proudly as the numerous totem poles that dot the community. Hailed as
the City of Totems, there are 41 magnificently-carved cedar poles extending upwards
in the downtown area alone, while over 30 have been erected nearby along the Trans-Canada
Highway. Another Duncan high point is the World's
Largest Hockey Stick, standing proudly at 63 m (201.6 ft), located outside
the Cowichan
Community Centre. Also soaring are the spirits of the Cowichan Tribe, one
of the largest First Nations bands in Canada. They welcome visitors to experience
their culture and traditions at the Quw'utsun'
Cultural and Conference Centre. Exhibits, storytelling and traditional crafts
including totem pole carving, beading and weaving are bound to elevate the minds
of guests. The annual salmon spawn also attracts visitors to Duncan, along with
a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.
